I’ve always been the type of person who, probably far too often, gets excited and happy when I see a dog walking my way. I mean, who wouldn’t?! Dogs are adorable and always so happy to see people. Simply put, their joy is contagious. I also like to believe that the big Man up stairs put dogs on this Earth specifically to show us how to love, care for others, and most importantly, how to enjoy the simple things in life. Dogs are so selfless, and as I was once told, they spend their entire lives loving US. Isn’t that crazy?! Think about it. From the first day you bring your dog home, to its last, it spends its life loving you. From the slobbery kisses, to the warm cuddles, to the jumping around when you’re reunited with them after a long day of work and school–dogs live to love.
I am writing this blog to talk about why I think dogs are a girl’s best friend–from my personal experiences. I am a senior at Texas A&M University (let’s be honest, the best university in the world) and I can vouch that my dog, Lola, is my best friend. Some quick background on Lola…my boyfriend and I adopted her from the Aggieland Humane Society about a year ago, and she has been the biggest blessing. Sure, adopting a dog while in college may have not been the wisest decision, but somehow, things have always worked out. I know God put her into my life for a reason, and he definitely brought her into my life at a time when I needed her love the most.
Here are 6 reasons why I think dogs are a girl’s best friend:
1. The best snuggle buddies.
I don’t know about you, but one of my all time favorite things is when my dog falls asleep on/near me. It’s the sweetest thing. Lola does this huge *sigh* when she’s found her comfy spot, and that’s when I know she’s about to fall asleep on me…restraining me to move for probably the next hour haha. C’mon, don’t tell me you don’t think a sleepy dog is the cutest thing–I’m sure we are all guilty of attempting to take pictures of our sleepy companions as they’re asleep near us! It’s nice waking up to a face that’s always happy to see you. Plus, if you’re like me and are constantly cold, they make the bed a little warmer. I like to warm my toes on lola when my feet are cold!
2. They’re always ridiculously happy to see you get home after school/work.
After a long day of school or work, it’s always nice to open your front door and see your furry pal so excited to see you. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been (you can be gone an hour) and they act like you’ve been gone for eternity! It’s the greatest feeling seeing something so genuinely happy to see you. Personally, I always look forward to opening my front door as I walk from the bus stop because I know my Lola will make a really bad day into a good one, or just make an already good day even better. I’ve always wondered what dogs think when we leave them for the day…because for them to always be so genuinely happy when we return, means they must really love us.
3. They make for great co-pilots!
There’s nothing more entertaining than seeing your dog have the time of its life as it sticks its head out of the passenger window on a drive. It cracks me up when the wind is blowing so hard against Lola’s face, that her mouth flops all which directions. See, it’s the little things in life like sticking their head out the window that make dogs so happy. I take Lola with me whenever I can. If I’m making a trip to Sonic or driving to put gas, or dropping something off at a friends house, Lola is my go-to-girl. Plus, she loves my taste in music–or at least I like to think so (haha)
4. Need a workout partner?
If you’re needing some motivation to go for a run, but don’t want to go alone, trust me, your dog will LOVE you if you take them for a run. Not only is this great for you, but exercising is great for your dog. Perhaps knowing that a good run can help improve your dog’s immune system and get their heart stronger can be an even bigger motivation for you to go out on a run with them. But, at the same time, your dog won’t judge you if you just want to stay on the couch binge watching Grey’s all day–they’ll join you :)
5. Dogs always know when you’re feeling sad, and they’ll gladly share their favorite toy with you, lots of hugs, and slobbery kisses.
If you think dogs can’t read human emotion, you’re wrong. Dogs can sense when we’re mad, happy, and even sad. And this is why I think a dog is a girl’s best friend because if you’re feeling alone or just really down in the dumps, your dog will be by your side until things brighten up–see, you’re never really “alone.” They don’t care about your faults and they’re not there to judge. There’s nothing more comforting than knowing your dog cares about you. Whenever I’m sad, Lola usually stays right by my side and gives me lots of kisses. It’s the best. I wouldn’t trade my puppy loving for the world.
6. They’ll give you something to laugh and smile about everyday.
Life is so much more enjoyable when you have a dog to turn some serious moments into goofy ones. They do the silliest things, and boy can they give you a good laugh. Recently, Lola had a bad itch on her neck that she constantly kept scratching, so to prevent her from hurting herself, I had to put one of my leg warmers around her neck. IT WAS SO FUNNY! She didn’t care about how funny she looked because her extra skin hung out around leg warmer like a lion’s mane, she just kept going on with her life like it was no big deal. But, it always gives me a good laugh seeing her walk my way with that leg warmer on. I don’t know about you, but my dog does something new each day that never ceases to make me smile.
I think dogs are pretty much the sweetest blessings. Whether you’re 4 years old or you’re 54, a dog is your forever friend. It’s our job to make sure that we make our dog’s short lives on this earth the best years ever, because they sure make our lives better. A six year old once said that
“People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life–like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right? Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”
Enjoy the simple things that your dog can teach you about life, like a good belly rub, a joy ride around the block, and to stop and smell the roses. But most of all, love them because they sure do love you!
